Project Management Challenges

A construction project management, with BIM, is often a tale of differing opinions and views. These issues come from the unique structure of construction projects. All stakeholders have different views and interests that could be hard to reconcile. Clients, lenders, material suppliers, engineers, builders, and subcontractors are all likely to approach the project from their own point of view.

External challenges such as government regulation, planning policy, and the weather may affect project progress.

There are a few common themes when project management problems arise, but they have a clear solution to minimize their impact on progress.

Poorly defined goals -

A project's lack of structure is the quickest way to descend into meeting hell. With one report suggesting that around 80% of projects run over budget and 70% fall behind time at some point in the process clearly understood and agreed objectives and touch points for them will mean that these overruns are easier to control.

Unrealistic expectations -

Impossible deadlines and unreasonable requests are major drains on morale and productivity. Breaking down the project into achievable portions with their own deadlines and objectives will bring buy-in from all stakeholders.

The contractors will have a schedule to work with and clients and financiers will understand what is possible and what is expected of everyone involved.

Money worries -

Exceeding budget is common as shown above. The project manager sets reasonable expectations for cost overruns and has a contingency plan.

Poor judgment, lack of oversight, or simple miscalculation can result in the project collapsing if the project manager misses information on the financing.

These are just three of a nearly endless list of potential traps that a construction can fall into. In our December blog we looked forward to the challenges of 2021 and introduced our partnership with Procore. Procore provides the single platform for all stakeholders that is essential in the “new normal”.
