Efficiency: How Delightful Can it Be to Dominate the Competition with Fewer People?

This blog is part of a series to find out how well your firm copes with the 6 required drivers, named “EARTHS”, to fully embrace the BIM culture. and get more projects with fewer people:

How can you be efficient?

You can be efficient independently of the software you are the most comfortable with, but you have to take the time to develop your company standards and templates to decuple your productivity.

Benefits of using templates:

Starting a project is faster and more efficient. Reducing Time wasted because various elements are being automatically generated.

Establishing geometric 0bjects data once instead of reinventing for each project.

  • Setting expectations for your team as they will not have to guess:

    • Which documents to use,
    • How the layouts and views should look like.
    • You present to your prospects and clients a consistent brand identity independently of whom in the firm is involved

Managing templates

The industry standard templates.

You want to use the industry-standard approach to essentially calculating or following a rule or a guideline or a method. Information industry standards are really great guidelines to help you get started and be BIM accredited.

Classifications.

They are great to organise, as the codes are consistent from project to project, but you should make sure that there is a customer for those classifications. They are not always structured in a way your modelling teams want to use them.

Best practice.

Having a generic template does not mean that you need to use the entire document, picking and choosing the information applicable to your firm or to your workflow is very efficient. The key is instead of having to copy a whole template you can start taking pieces of that template and apply it to your projects.

In conclusion:

Starting with templates significantly reduces admin, however, there are challenges. A common framework can help mitigate many of these: Involving team members and supporting rapid feedback loops to build trust in the system. The result will be higher quality outputs and happier teams.
