The fact that Building information modelling (BIM) is not software, has been repeated so many times that you should certainly have heard it. BIM is done using BIM (enabled) software, so let us have a look at those.

The Modelling Software

A technology used for making assets designs. It allows architects, engineers, construction managers, and others to collaborate during the design and construction phases. It is also especially useful, in the in-use phase, to maintain the assets.

This technology is critical for visualising concepts and turning ideas into concrete reality.

We classify the Management software in two categories:

• Coordination. Design coordination is a broad term describing the integration of designs prepared by different members of the project team to create a single, unified set of information that can be constructed without clashes between components.
• Common Data Environment (CDE). The Common Data Environment (CDE) is the single source of information for the project, used to collect, manage and disseminate documentation, the graphical model, and non-graphical data for the whole project team (i.e. all project information whether created in a BIM environment or in a conventional data format). Creating this single source of information facilitates collaboration between project team members and helps avoid duplication and mistakes.
