BIM and ISO19650 - a new protocol for information management

ISO 19650 is a series of international standards defining the collaborative processes for information management.

Information management is a cycle of organizational activity: the acquisition of information from one or more sources, the custodianship and the distribution of that information to those who need it, and its ultimate disposition through archiving or deletion.

The UK 1192 series of standards evolved from its inception in the 1980s, to be the basis of the UK Government’s BIM level two plans in 2011. From there it was clear that a standard that reflected the changing place of information in the construction industry was needed and the ISO19650 series was published starting in 2019.

Writing on BIM Plus Andy Boutle, head of BIM for Kier Construction, said:

“It is essential that the industry focuses on ‘information as an asset’ as much as the physical asset itself. At both a business and project level, outcomes are determined by decisions, and decisions are based on information. We therefore need to make sure information management is embedded and treated with the same importance as design, project, and asset management.”

BIM is hard-wired into the ISO19650 series of standards. The key areas of managing data are split into four sections:

Part one covers the basic concepts and principles of information management.

Part 2 focuses on the delivery of the assets.

Part 3 looks at the operational aspects of the assets after construction.

Part 4 is for a ”security-minded approach to information management”.

Reading a flow chart of the relationships between ISO19650, PAS1192, and BS8536, amongst several other documents on the UK BIM Framework website presents a complex picture that may raise barriers in some businesses to tackling implementation and understanding the requirements.
